Turning a Job into Career

Job vs Career

What is a job? A job refers to an activity performed in order to earn money. It is purely an exchange between work and remuneration, nothing beyond that. Career, on the other hand, is the progression towards lifetime working enthusiasms and ambitions to pursue the ultimate goals of one's profession.

What It Takes to Turn a Job into Career?

Do you feel bored, unchallenged and unmotivated in performing your everyday work? If so, you may have treated your current employment as solely a job. You may be highly remunerated, yet you never feel happy in your working environment. Hence, it may not be true to say the higher you get paid, the happier you will be in your working life.

The key to get yourself enthusiastic and motivated is to turn your job into career. How can you achieve that? Here are some tips:

  • Understand the vision and mission of your company and how you can fit in. You would know what is the expectation of your company on you. From there, you identify your own strength and capability in helping your company to grow.

  • Develop the values in your career. Value refers to the benefits of what you are doing to people in general and to yourself. This is very important and you simply cannot replace value with money. By understanding how your career can help people to improve their everyday life and benefiting yourself, you develop enthusiasm in your work.

  • Be initiative and proactive. Learn how to do things independently. Know your job responsibilities and take initiatives to accomplish them without having to be reminded again and again. Be proactive to get to know people working around you and ask their opinions on how you can perform better as you may sometimes have blind spots when evaluating yourself.

  • Identify your capacity. Always ask these questions to yourself: "Have I done my best?" "Is there any room to improve on how I do things?" You will know how far you can go from the point where you are now.

People tends to change jobs when they are not satisfied with the working conditions. It is not something wrong to do, but it may not be able to solve the main issues. Next time, if you are about to quit a job, ask yourself if you have done the best you can. A career is not meant to be found, but to be created and innovated.
