If you are one of the bondholders of US savings bonds, do you know how much interest the bonds you are holding earn for you? Calculating bond interest is easy with the online calculator available on Treasury Direct website.

 

How to Calculate Savings Bond Interest with Online Calculator?

  • Firstly, you need to go to the Treasury Direct website. Under "Tools" tab, you can see there are lots of tools helping you to manage your bonds well. Click on "Savings Bond Calculator".

  • You need to key in the details required in the calculator. In the "Value as of" box, the default value is current month. However, you fill in a future date as well.

  • Then, you need to select the series of your bonds in the "Series" drop-down list. You can choose from EE Bonds, I Bonds, E Bonds and Savings Notes.

  • Next, in the "Denomination" drop-down list, select the denomination amount.

  • Find out your bond serial number and issue date and fill out the "Bond Serial Number" and "Issue Date" boxes. Upon completion, click on "Calculate".

  • By now, you should see the results appear below the calculator. Beside what you have filled in, the results shown are the Next Accrual date, the Final Maturity date, the Issue Price, the amount of Interest you earn, the Interest Rate and the Value of your bonds.

  • There is also a column of Note which show the codes "NI", "NE", "P5" or "MA". "NI" represents not issued. "NE" represents not eligible for payment, while "P5" and "MA" indicates the bond includes 3 months interest penalty and matured but not earning interest respectively.

  • If you have more than one savings bonds, just repeat the above steps. Then you should see the new results (with different serial number) appear beneath the old results. Repeat until all your bonds details have been fully keyed in.

  • By then, you should also see the accumulative results, slightly above. You should see the Total Price, Total Value, Total Interest and YTD Interest, readily calculated for you.
